Deleting User Profiles in Vista

When deleting user profiles in Vista, be careful how you go about it. If you simply delete their folder under Users, you can cause problems. If a user logs in with the account after the folder has been deleted, he or she will see errors stating that a temporary profile is being used and no changes will be saved.

Instead, be sure to use the delete tool under Control Panel –> User Accounts –> Configure advanced user profile properties. If you do make the mistake of doing it the “old” way, there is a registry key that you can delete:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\ProfileList
